Looking Back at the 2000 Cup Championship Run

Written by Darren S on .

Tonight the Devils look back and remember the 2000 Stanley Cup so I thought this would be a good time for me to do it as well.

When one starts talking about the New Jersey Devils cup run in 2000, one can't help but start the conversation with 8 games remaining in the Devils 1999/2000 regular season schedule. A 5-10-1 slide in the final push of the season, punctuated by a 5-0 loss at home to Carolina was enough reason for the New Jersey Devils to show Robbie Ftorek the door. This move shocked the entire NHL fan base, not just the Devils fan base because the Devils were having a great season and were certainly a heavy favorite to compete for the cup before going into the 15 game skid. No team has succeeded in winning a championship by changing the head coach so late into the season. Nice guy Larry Robinson was now the man to deliver the second cup to NJ.

Things started off extremely well for NJ as they whooped Pavel Bure and the Florida Panthers in 4 straight games. The second round saw the Devils take on a pretty talented Toronto Maple Leafs team but outlasted the Leafs in 6 games to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. The one thing I will remember about the second matchup with the Leafs was Game 6 when the Devils held the Leafs to 6 shots total for the entire game, a dominating performance, perhaps the most dominating performance ever.

The Devils took on the Flyers in the ECF for the second time in their history and quickly fell into a 3-1 hole. I still remember the post-game news conference with Larry Robinson, who always seems so laid back but spoke in such a stern voice about his team, saying that they thought things should be done one way and until they learn to listen to the coaches, they will not succeed. I guess they listened because little by little the Devils worked their way back into the series and forced a Game 7 in Philadelphia. That game 7 would have so many memorable moments, starting with Lindros getting knocked out by Stevens and ending with Elias sending the Devils to the finals with a GWG with a little over 2 mins left in the game.

The Stars were a very talented team and looking to repeat. I thought going into the series that this was a team with something to prove. For the last year we had heard about Brett Hull being in the crease and that the Stars shouldn't have won the cup on that play. I remember being shocked when the Devils destroyed the Stars in game 1 by a score of 7-3 and can still vividly picutre Belfour sulking on the bench after getting the hook. Dallas tied the series at 1 but quickly got down in the series and NJ returned home with a chance to clinch it in game 5. Game 5 was one for the ages. With a 0-0 tie going into OT, no one could have imagined it would stay scoreless for so long. This was a game no Devils fan could turn off because 1 goal meant skating the cup at home and no amount of sleep was worthing missing that, but unfortunately that goal wouldn't come in Game 5. Instead, it was Mike Modano that beat Marty in the 3rd OT to give the Stars a 1-0 win and send the series back to Dallas. I think I remember going to bed around 1:00 am that morning.

By far my favorite line in the history of the Devils was the "A-Line". I don't think there has ever been a better line for our organization, either before or after 2000 (which you can understand why Dallas had to trade for Arnott 2 seasons later). That line delivered in the 2nd OT in Game 6 clinching the cup for NJ. Thanks to a dirty Darien Hatcher, Petr Sykora missed the on-ice celebration but linemate Patrik Elias wore Sykora's jersey on his back during the celebration.

To me, there was no better team than this one in 2000. This is by far, my favorite of the 3 cups that NJ has won. The rookies (Gomez, Madden, Rafalski and White) were the big story that season and Niedermayer, Stevens and Marty absolutely killed in the playoffs. For weeks the Devils had heard that the things they had done (changing coaches, getting in a 3-1 hole, etc.) were things that teams can't do and overcome when trying to win a championship, yet did it anyway. I was at that celebration in the parking lot of the Continental Airlines Arena and it remains one of the happiest Devils memories I have.

I asked Cole from The Other 6 Seconds to write a little something about his experience that summer and this is what he had to say:

Any time two teams meet each other in the Finals, the two franchises are linked forever in history. Every time the Stars play the Devils or the Sabres, there's always some mention of our back to back Finals trips at the turn of the century. When the captain of the opposing team was such a huge part of the glory years of our own franchise, it makes the links that much stronger.

As a Stars fan, it's impossible to think about the 2000 Finals or the New Jersey Devils without thinking about Joe Nieuwendyk, Jamie Langenbrunner, or Jason Arnott. Even though the trade wouldn't happen until 2002, it's forever linked in the mind of this Stars fan. At the time the trade went down, we were still stinging from Arnott's goal. Doug Armstrong was trying desperately to make his mark on the team while pushing us back into position to make a serious playoff push. In doing so, he jerked his proverbial knee, and gifted your lovely franchise with our #15 (a gift that continues to give). That's still the most controversial and upsetting trade in Dallas Stars history according to most fans. Nieuwy and Jamie won another Cup together in your team colors. Randy McKay, in turn, did everything he could to get out of Texas... and even though I like him, Jason Arnott was fairly pedestrian during his time in Dallas, and jumped ship for Nashville shortly after.

Not everything associated with that Finals was negative, though. I feel that Mike Modano was at the peak of his career during those playoffs, and was doing absolutely everything to will his team to it's second Cup. Hull was showing his veteran clutch ability, even though he was finally starting to show his age. The Stars made it into an
interesting series, but the stage was really set in Game 1 with Eddie Belfour's performance. I didn't even like seeing Manny Fernandez play when he was scheduled to do so. When he had to take the ice in game 1, I knew there was a serious chance that the Cup was about to head back North and East.

I was 15 years old when the Stars played the Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals, but it doesn't feel like 10 years in the past. I vividly remember seeing Arnott push the puck past Belfour at Reunion, and knowing that it was all over. I didn't cry. I didn't throw anything. I remember just sinking back in my chair, turning off the television, and going to bed. Reunion Arena has since been torn down... very slowly and awkwardly... For the longest time, the roof and pillars were up, and the walls were gone. Even though  the old barn was a place filled with so many cherished memories for me, I couldn't help but see the Devils skating with the Cup every time I drove by the wreckage and looked down into what used to be the lower bowl.

I've got nothing but respect for the Devils, and the way that they carry themselves from management down to the fans. I'm not so much a fan of Brodeur, but that's a different story for a different day. That said, a lot of Stars fans are going to be watching this game with the intentions of exacting our own form of revenge... in whatever small way a regular season victory against a non-conference opponent can avenge a Championship won a decade ago. Such is the life of a Texas hockey fan. no comments

Top 5 Devils Goals from 2000-2009

Written by Darren S on .

Since its the last day of 2009, I thought I would present my Top 5 Devils Goals over the last decade. These are the ones that I feel are worthy.

#5 - Brian Gionta sets new Devils record for goals in a season. (you have to fast forward to the 1:37 mark of the video to see it).

#4 - The first Devils goal scored in the new Prudential Arena. (Kind of a weak goal but it is the first Devils goal scored in this building!)

#3 - Zach Parise's First NHL Goal - The first of many from this kid. He's electrifying and certainly a superstar of this team.

#2 - Jeff Friesen sends the Devils to the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals. (The thing about this goal is a Friesen penatly allowed Ottawa to tie this game and Burns told Friesen that he owed him big and he delivered with 2:14 to go in the game.)

#1 - The one and only Jason Arnott, in double OT to bring home the Devils second Stanley Cup

Honorable Mentions

#1 - Elias Sends NJ to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2000 - link

#2 - Jeff Friesen scores his second of the night to give the Devils a 3-0 lead in Game 7 of the 2003 Cup Finals (I just love Friesen's reaction after if goes in!!) - link

#3 - Elias to Sykora from behind the net against the Stars in Game 1 of the 2000 Cup Finals - link

Marty Brodeur - NHL MVP of the Decade

Written by Darren S on .

Just wanted to take a minute out of my day and bring this to the attention of all Devils fans and all Devils haters. NHL.com has announced that Martin Brodeur is the MVP of the Decade. Brodeur was the easy winner among the voting panel as the most valuable player of the 2000s, topping Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who, in turn, was far ahead of anyone else, including Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. So Devils fans, say it with me... "MARTY'S BETTER!!"

Week 11 - Player Ups and Downs

Written by Darren S on .

Goalies:
M. Brodeur - Didn't have a great game against the Panthers, looked pretty good against the Flyers and didn't get much work against the Canadiens but went 2-1 this week so you have to give him credit on that. He had a .905 save % this week which would have been higher had he not been beaten 4 times against Florida.

Forwards:
R. Pelley - Picked up an assist against Montreal. He's averaging between 7 and 10 mins of ice time a game. Not bad
T. Zajac -  Had 2 assists vs Philly but the goals have stopped. Hope he finds the scoring touch again soon.
P. Elias - 3 goals and 1 assist this week including the GWG against the Canadiens. I ask you this, who in the history of the Devils has been more clutch than #26? Maybe Claude..
Z. Parise - Can't seem to find the back of the net and having trouble finding the scoresheet at all this week. Hope the drought ends soon.
N. Bergfors - 2 goals against the Flyers.
J. Langenbrunner - One assist in the loss to Florida and one really bone-headed play at the point during a power play. Sorry Jamie, you didn't have a good week.
B. Rolston - Slowly Rolston is creeping off the naughty list. He seems to be doing the right things out there. Tape to tape pass to Elias on a 2 on 1 instead of shooting it, throwing it low off the goalie so Elias can play it, etc. Rolston is either waking up or Elias is just making him look good.
R. Niedermayer - He didn't do much for me this week but he didn't kill anyone either.
J. Pandolfo - Been playing with Brother Nieds and both leave the same impression this week.
I Pikkarainen - 1st NHL goal (flukey as f*ck)... welcome the to the NHL Goal Scorers Scoresheet. Sometimes getting #1 opens the flood gates..Lets just hope!!
V. Zharkov - I like this kid, he comes to play every night. As a friend said, he reminds me of Elias when he first came up. Doing everything well but just not finding the net. It will come, look at Elias now!!
D. McAmmond - I like Dean, I think he's help make it look like NJ actually has a 4th line. I worry about the playoffs with him but in the Regular Season i like him.

Defense:
I thought this week I would adress the Defense as a whole instead of player by player. I haven't felt great about the Defense for some time but this week they just seemed disinterested. They are playing disciplined and staying out of the box but that is Lemaire's style, so I credit him with that. Oduya hasn't done much of anything this season but especially since coming back. I certainly hope Martin changes some things whenever he returns but the way that the D is just coasting through games, I would love to see the kids like Correntte and Eckford get some ice time.

So D guys, lets pick up a little bit out there because this week you're rating is a combined YELLOW!!

Player of the week - Patrik Elias with his 3 goals and 1 assist and a heads up play that lead to a GWG against the Canadiens.

Devils Week 10 Up and Downs

Written by Darren S on .

Goalies:
M. Brodeur - Thought he played OK against the Wings, played outstanding against Buffalo and made some big saves against Carolina to keep them from tying the game.

Forwards:
R. Pelley - He's been part of a much improved 4th line, which I give most of the credit to his linemates. He doesn't score but he's generating some shots. He's not great but he's not bad (notice the new color).
T. Zajac - Had an up and down week from me. He got a few points, his faceoff wins were good against buffalo but less than 50% in the others.
P. Elias - Like Zajac he was good in a couple games, not a factor in the others although when he lined up to take the shootout agasint the Wings, the entire arena knew the game was about to be done.
Z. Parise - Played the role of assist man this week but as per usual, he gets the job done. See that shooutout goal agasint the Wings, I think he took Osgood's jock in the process!!
N. Bergfors - 2 goals and an assist, evertyhing is just about going this kids way. Sadly for Sweden, he was deemed ineligable for the Olympics this week.
M. Halischuk - Played vs TB, scratched the rest of the way.
J. Langenbrunner - Jamie just keeps racking up the assists.
B. Rolston - Starting to feel like he's getting a point in every other game, so he's due tonight? D. McAmmond - I love what this guy is bringing. Yea, he's not putting up points but sometimes you can overlook that if the intangeables are being done correctly.
R. Niedermayer - 1 goal, 1 assist and 1 magnificent screen.
J. Pandolfo - a couple of assists, can I really ask for anything more?
I Pikkarainen - Still gets my vote as weakest member on his line.
V. Zharkov - has been a pleasent surprise. Points are points and if you do that, you get no complaints from me. (see Rolston's rating this week!)

Defense:
M. Fraser - Gotta block shots better. Anytime the go off your stick, off your leg and in your own net, you're not getting huge props from me.
A. Greene - By far the most productive d-man on the team.
M. Mottau - Does the little things right and rang one off the post against the canes.
B. Salvador - He's banging some bodies which is good..right?
C. White - I don't know about Colin...he's our for another few years but there are times I forget he's even out there.
J. Oduya - First game back he gets a goal and then back to his ways.
M. Corrente - Plays a little bit but sure is a scrappy little guy.

Individually, there aren't a lot of guys that stand out to me this week but it was more team efforts that got it done.

Player of the week - (Tie) Marty for the milestone and Andy Greene for an awesome game against the Hurricanes.

2010 Vancouver Games: Which Devils Will Be There

Written by Darren S on .

It's right around the corner so we might as well talk about it. As much as I wish every Devils player could go home and relax, refuel and get focused for the playoffs during the Olympic break, that's not going to happen. There WILL be NJ Devils representing various countries at the 2010 Games in Vancouver and here's who I think we'll be watching.

Absolutely Going To Vancouver:

Zach Parise - Parise is currently 13th in the league in goals and points and 2nd in Goals and 1st in points in the league when you narrow it down to American born players. Not only is Parise a sure thing (baring injury) to be wearing a Team USA jersey in February, one just wonders if that jersey might have a "C" on it. It should be pure joy watching this kid compete at the international level with guys like Kane and Kesler.

Marty Brodeur - Marty left the Team Canada Evaluation Camp with everyone asking "Brodeur or Luongo?" but if you take a moment and look at the numbers, Marty is the answer without question. Of course the Olympics are in Luongo's city so that may play into his favor and Fleury does have youth on his side but if Canada wants to win gold, why not go with they guy that's actually done it for you before?

Patrik Elias - Isn't he the best Czech hockey player in the world? At least that was the award handed out to him last year so I would expect the Czech's to want the best on their team. He's slowly getting healthier every day and as long as he continues that trend, then he should be there.

Maybe We'll See Them, Maybe We Won't::

Paul Martin - I thought this guy would have been a lock for Team USA until his injury. Burke said that Martin's injury wouldn't play into the decision on his chances but I'm not sure I believe that completely. He probably won't see the ice for a few more weeks so how does Team USA know he's healthy in time for the New Years Day announcement? Personally, I would put him on because a healthy Martin (who is sure to be 100% by February) logs a lot of ice time shutting down the opposition.

Jamie Langenbrunner - The last time Jamie saw Olympic ice was in 1998. When I heard he got an invite to the Team USA camp in the summer, I was a bit surprised. Sure, Jamie is a solid player who commands the point and is coming off his best offensive season so maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Personally, I have a list of players well above Jamie to make the team but he is experienced so maybe he can be an asset to all the young guys I have picked to head to Vancouver.

The Long Shots:

Travis Zajac - I actually think he's kind of a long shot. Don't get me wrong, he's a valuable member of the Devils organization and we can depend on him to bring his game to the rink night in and night out but I think he's on the outside looking in. Canada has a slew of players to choose from like Joe Thornton, Sidney Crosby, Brad Richards, Patrick Marleau, Mike Richards, Rich Peverley, Ryan Getzlaf, and Paul Statsny. I just don't see Zajac cracking a way on to the team but stranger things have happened.

Niklas Bergfors - Prior to the season I would have said absolutely not but the kid has been turning all kinds of heads this season. It's recently been said that Team Sweden is trying to get Bergfors on the eligibility list so maybe he does have a shot. If you look closely at the numbers, he's currently 9th among Swedish skaters in scoring and 3rd among Swedish right wingers so based on that, why wouldn't we be seeing Bergfors in Vancouver? I still think he's a long shot.

Johnny Oduya - Based on the contract he signed over the summer, I thought Oduya was a sure thing for Team Sweden but then the season started and he was nothing short of horrid showing little on both sides of the puck and then he gets injured and misses a large chunk of games. Now he's back and needs to buckle down and start showing everyone his capabilities but I think Team Sweden is already set with defensemen so I don't see much hope for Oduya.

The rest of the Devils roster should be home during the break getting ready for the final push of the season.

Devils Week 7 Ups and Downs

Written by Darren S on .

Goalies:
M. Brodeur - A Win, a loss and a shootout loss. I thought he played decently this week although I thought he made a mistake that allowed Philly to score their 3rd goal on Monday.

Forwards:
R. Pelley - Not averaging a lot of ice time but I think he picked up the slack on faceoffs once Zubrus left the Nashville game.
T. Zajac - 2 assists against Washington and 1 against Nashville.
D. Zubrus - 1 assist against Washington and decent face-off numbers. Devils percentage at winning face-offs took a drastic hit once he left the Nashville game. If he's injured for a long period of time, this would be a significant injury.
P. Elias - Picked up 3 points during the week, took a few shots. Other than his whining, I thought he had a good week.
Z. Parise - Goals in 6 straight games and this guy always seems to be where the puck is going to be.
A. Peters - Still don't know what he brings to the table. He gets a shot a game..maybe and spent too much time in Nashville trying to get Tootoo to fight him when it's obvious to non-hockey fans Tootoo wasn't going to fight him period.
N. Bergfors - 2 points against Washington and is still aggressively getting to the puck. I would like to see him shoot more though.
D. Clarkson - Had that nice goal against Philly to bring NJ into the game briefly.
M. Halischuk - Got his first goal against the Caps, played just alright in Philly (but so did the entire team) and didnt play against the Preds.
J. Langenbrunner - 1 goal and 2 assists in 3 games will get anyone a green colored name.
B. Rolston - Another week, another big fat 0 on the scoresheet. Averages 3 shots per game. Lets do the math shall we? He gets 5 million a year which is about 60,000 bux a game, 3 shots means we're paying him 20grand per shot...SCORE WILL YOU??? I'd miss shots for 1/10 of that...
T. Sestito - First point of the season came against Washington, who didn't get a point in that game..oh wait Rolston.. Logging decent time, the goals will come.
D. McAmmond - Great first game, I like what he brings.

Defense:
M. Fraser - Luke warm on him but he's not killing us. Honestly you don't hear his name alot.
A. Greene - Didn't get points this week but he jumps up and does his part.
M. Mottau - He comes up with occasional import shot block, doesn't take penalties, what's not to like?
C. Murphy - A goal and an assist vs the Caps, played in Philly then sent to Lowell...OUCH, the least I could do is make his name green for the Caps game.
B. Salvador - Pretty much the same critique as Mottau
C. White - Goal and assist this week (for a while it was 2 goals). Not 100% sure what happened to him on Arnott's first goal but certainly was f*cking that chicken.
T. Eckford - Liked what he brought in his first game and think he's a better option that Murphy (even with his goal and assist).

Injured and Scratched
R. Niedermayer, J. Pandolfo, P. Leblond, I. Pikkarainen, P. Martin, J. Oduya

Player of the week - Can't justify not giving it to Zach Parise.

Devils First Quarter Thoughts

Written by Darren S on .

With 19 games in the books for the New Jersey Devils, they are on the verge of completing the first quarter of their season. So I pose a question to the Devils fans who come here and read my thoughts on the Devils. What are the biggest surprises (the good, the bad and the ugly) for you so far this season with the Devils? Of course I am going to give you my list.

The Good:
When the Devils announced that Jaques Lemaire was going to be taking over for the recently departed Brent Sutter back in July, most Devils fans took a deep breath and asked "What?" The point of Sutter's existance in NJ was to change the Devils into a more offensive minded team and they proved last year that the had enough offensive talent on the team. We've often heard about Marion Gaborik's struggles in the all defensive system under Lemaire in Minnesota, would that be the case for Parise and Zajac this season? Lets be brutally honest here for a moment. Whenever Jaques Lemaire is the man behind the bench, the words "trap" and "boring" get thrown around a lot. With the Devils bringing in a coach known for that style of hockey, it made everyone wonder, even the hard-core Devils fans, if Lou & Co. thought that was a better recipe for winning. So far, Lemaire has proved that is not what he is here to do because the Devils have been everything but boring. For instance in a post-period interview last night, Scott Hartnell of the Flyers refered to the Devils as a "quick transitional team," a phrase no one would have used to describe NJ 10-15 years ago. Guys like Parise, Zajac and Clarkson are spending quality time forechecking (and doing so aggressively) and the defense is pinching up with the offense way more than Sutter ever allowed them to. The point is, this isn't the Jaques Lemaire we knew and loved in the mid 90's, it's a better Jaques Lemaire because he's adapted to the game around him. Now I know it's only November and the Devils may be playing way above their heads but so far, 20 games in, it was the right move.

David Clarkson had a respectable season last year posting 17 goals and 15 assists and averaging about 12 minutes of ice time per game. Through 19 games this season he has 7 goals and 8 assists and is averaging just over 15.5 minutes per game but Lemaire seems to be putting David Clarkson on the ice in very key moments, which proves the growing confidence that Lemaire has in Clarkson. My opinion of Clarkson a few years back was that he was going to be the guy to replace Cam Janssen after we shipped him off to St. Louis but he's become so much more than that.

Andy Greene saw action in 49 games last season and had 2 goals, 9 assists and 16 minutes of ice time in those 49 games. So far this season, he's turned into a real key player on the blue line. He's almost tied his total point production from last season and is averaging 22 minutes per game. Yes I realize the injuries on the blue line have pumped up is ice time numbers but this is another guy that Lemaire is gaining confidence in almost daily.

I was at the stadium the day the Devils drafted Niclas Bergfors back in the 2005 entry draft so I've been keeping my eye on him since then. At the time, we heard how much the Devils would love this guy but for the past few seasons, it seemed like he wasn't going to make it out of Lowell...ever!! His first few games this season, he looked very timid and I wasn't sure if he was going to work out but since that Rangers game at MSG on Oct 22, he's looked very comfortable. The kid has some wheels and has been making some good decisions out there.

The Bad
The Devils are going to play a lot of close games this season. They are talented on the offensive side of the puck but I don't think they are so talented that they leave teams behind in the beginning of the third period. They will have those games from time to time, it just won't happen often. When the Devils lose close games, I keep pointing the finger at Marty. For instance, the loss to Philadelphia last night, I pinned on him because of his boneheaded play that led to the Flyers third goal. There have been times where I think Marty has been stellar but there are moments, like last night that I think he tries to do too much. The Devils are 6th overall in shots allowed per game so I'm not sure what more the defense has to do in order to gain Marty's confidence in their ability.

I don't think of the Devils as a phyical team this season. So far the Devils have 9 major penalties and are on track for somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 majors by the end of the season. The Devils ended up with 58 majors last year and I thought proved to the NHL that they weren't a team easily pushed around, which is how I felt the NHL viewed them in 2007/2008. Case in point, Sean Avery had his way with them multiple times that year and never really paid the price. Now the Devils have been winning (and winning can sometimes make teams a little less physical) and some of the majors have come at key times, for instance Clarkson v Clark in the Caps first game, but I am wondering if teams like Philly and NY will push the Devils around in order to get them off their game.

The Ugly
I've been killing Brian Rolston in my weekly up and down reports since week 1 but to be honest, I think I've been pretty accurate with my critique. We are paying him superstar money and I know he's the type of player that when he's hot, he's incredibly hot and when he's not, he's REALLY not but so far this season, I see very little effort from him. I know that he's second on the team in shots yet 7th on the team in points (with half the point total as Bergfors who is 5th). He needs to step it up and he needs to do so yesterday. He's a guy that expect to be in the top 5 in each category come the end of the season but at this pace, he'd be better off wearing a mask on the ice so we fans know that he is out there robbing us.

Final Outlook
All in all the Devils have put together an impressive first quarter. After losing the first two homes games, we started wondering if the moves that were made and not made this summer were the right ones. The injury bug has certainly bitten this team and some key players but the Devils have dug deep and overcome them as a team and there is very little more a fan could ask for.

Week 6: Devils Up and Down Report

Written by Darren S on .

Goalies:
M. Brodeur - Played 3 of the 4 games on the schedule this week and did a solid job. After a bad start to the very beginning of the season, Marty has settled into what we all expect. The goal Thurs night against Pitt WASN'T his fault and that should have been the shutout record-tying game.

Y. Denis - Looked sharp in his win against the Islanders. With Marty playing so well, Yann should get used to sitting.

Forwards:
R. Niedermayer  - Currently injured no word on a return date.
R. Pelley - Thought his best game was against the Islanders.
T. Zajac - Had a quiet week until going to Pittsburgh were he put up 3 assists, including a nice play on the Parise goal.
D. Zubrus - Averaging a lot of ice time but not producing. He did draw a nice penalty on Scott Niedermayer though.
P.Elias -  Finally back in the lineup. He skipped the Sens game  but already has as many shots (7) in the three games he's played as Pikkarainen has in the 13 he's played.
J. Pandolfo - Still hurt, few weeks left to go until his return.
Z. Parise - Other than the Islanders who kept Zach quiet, he's been good for 1 goal AND 1 assist each of the last three games. Leads the team in goals, assists and points and probably popularity too.
A. Peters - This guys ticket to Lowell get misplaced?
N. Bergfors - 4 points in 4 games and scored again vs Pitt...
D. Clarkson - At least a point a game in each game this week. MONEY!! oh and he had 1 fight too!!
M. Halischuk - Still looking for that first point but he came close against Pitt (I thought). He's only 21 but then again Bergfors is only 22.
J. Langenbrunner - Keeps contributing on a nightly basis.
P. Leblond - Sitting for some reason
I. Pikkarainen - As I said earlier, Elias has already duplicated his stats in 3 games.
B. Rolston - Still sour at this guy, don't feel his worth much and he missed a game for some reason.

Defense:
M. Fraser - I don't expect much out of Fraser, but he's along with the rest of the D are doing a respectable job.
A. Greene - I think this guy is having a hell of a season so far. Had a great week (2 goals and 3 assists).
P. Martin - Still hurt and still a few weeks away from returning.
M. Mottau - Even with zero points, all D guys are doing a hell of job especially when the perception out there is that most of these guys are 5-6-7 type d-men at best.
C. Murphy - Had a weak ass goal against the Islanders but he's probably the worst guy out there yet still shutting down the opposition.
J. Oduya - Hurt and had a set back, I heard it was because he went to bathe in all the money we've given him and slipped.
B. Salvador - Got an assist against the Penguins.
C. White - Nice assist on the Parise shorthanded goal against the Ducks. What made it nice was the play he made on his former linemate.

Devils as a team are on fire, winning 7 in a row, 9-1 in the last ten and remaining unbeaten (9-0-0) on the road.  My player of the week award this week goes to David Clarkson and yes Andy Greene was a very close second.

Week 5 - Devils Up and Down Report

Written by Darren S on .

M. Brodeur 2 wins stopping 18 of 19 in Tampa and then stopping 26 of 28 against Washington. Playing much better recently.
Y. Denis - He had the week off but gets the call against the Islanders tonight.
R. Niedermayer He had an assist against the Caps but left the game with an injury in the 3rd and will miss the next two. Normally, an assist would get a nice green arrow but the injury does more damage.
R. Pelley Maybe if he did more than wrestle the guy to the ground on Wednesday. Why was this guy money for me in NHL 09?
T. Zajac A goal and 2 assists this week. Overall he has 13 pts in 12 games..say it with me... MONEY!!
D. Zubrus Thought he was a little too quiet this week
P.Elias - RETURNING TONIGHT!!! WOOOOOOOO
J. Pandolfo - Still Injured
Z. Parise Had a heads up assist on Bergfors 1st goal on Wednesday. Put himself in the right position to make the play. He's a smart player.
A. Peters NEXT!!
N. Bergfors 2 goals against the Caps. I think he's doing everything he can with the time he's been given to show us what he's made of. This kid does NOT want to go back to Lowell and its showing.
D. Clarkson He's been too quiet for my liking. If fact, it seems like last year NJ was more willing to throw down the gloves. He did have a surprise shootout goal that won it in TB.
M. Halischuk - Sent to Lowell, called back up but didn't do much.
J. Langenbrunner Plays smart, had some good chances on Wednesday and picked up an assist.
P. Leblond Didn't do much, didn't get much time out there either. 4th line blows.
I. Pikkarainen He just doesn't look comfortable out there.
B. Rolston STOP THE PRESSES, he got a goal. Wait, it was a lucky bounce and I don't think it's going to wake him up but in an interview I heard him say he wasn't pleased with his play so at least he realizes he needs to be doing more. Point a game Brian..A POINT A GAME!!
M. Fraser He's logging some time, he's not hurting us thats for sure.
A. Greene He's my biggest surprise, well he and Bergfors but he's doing the job that needs to be done out there.
P. Martin Still injured
M. Mottau He's putting in the hours and while he's not in the scoring card, the other teams aren't scoring bunches so that's what we ask from him.
C. Murphy Found his way back to NJ but its temporary, especially since he adds very little.
J. Oduya Still Injured
B. Salvador Like Mottau, he's logging good minutes out there and keeping the other team out of the scorebook.
C. White He's got the bulk of the minutes and proving to us why. He didn't look good on the Caps first goal but got it together after that.

My "Player of the Week" award goes to Niklas Bergfors which surprised me and pleases me greatly.
